About {Gather Together}

An annual, in-person gathering of the Final Fantasy XI community, mostly the private-server crowd, and open to anyone who still calls Vana'diel home.

Old game, new friendships

Most of us didn't know each other back in the day. We found each other more recently, online, brought together by a game we'd each loved for years, and somewhere along the way it grew into the real thing: friendships worth crossing the country to keep up with in person. The game is old. These bonds aren't. And wherever you play, there's a seat at the table for you.

Why we gather in person

Once a year we close the game, step outside, and touch some grass. People you've only known as a name in a party list turn real, with a face, a handshake, and a seat at the same table. And it carries: a few days together in person keep the whole community closer all year, long after everyone's flown home.

What a gathering feels like

It stays cozy and casual, the kind of weekend where there's no wrong way to do it. We land in a big, walkable city each year, base ourselves somewhere central with plenty to do, and fill the days with karaoke, good food, a few too many drinks, and a lot of catching up. Mostly, though, it's about the people, not the itinerary. First-timers almost always show up nervous, bracing for how awkward it'll be to meet a crowd of online friends in person. It never is. This community is close-knit by nature, and being in the same room just proves the screen was never much of a barrier: an hour in, it feels like you've known each other for years, because in every way that counts, you have.
